Walking with the Ancestors: A 12 Day Journey in South Africa
A pilgrimage home. A remembering. A return to the source.
“Walking with the Ancestors” is a once in a lifetime, 12 day experience across sacred South African landscapes, designed especially for members of the African diaspora seeking reconnection, restoration, and deep cultural remembrance. Curated by Darren Le Baron in collaboration with Sacred Sites Tours and a collective of internationally respected teachers, elders, traditional healers and wisdom keepers, this journey traces humanity’s earliest footsteps from the cradle of humankind to living traditions that still breathe today.
Journey Highlights
Johannesburg — The Pulse of Modern Africa
Your journey begins in Africa’s most dynamic metropolis, a city of resilience, creativity, and forward momentum. From thriving arts districts and jazz clubs to vibrant cafés and historic townships, Johannesburg offers a powerful introduction to contemporary South Africa and its revolutionary spirit. This will serve as our base for grounding, orientation, and cultural immersion.
The Cradle of Humankind — Where Our Story Begins
Stand on the soil that holds the largest concentration of ancestral human remains on Earth. Here, deep time becomes tangible as we explore the paleoanthropological site that reshaped humanity’s understanding of its origins. A profound moment of reconnection with the ancient past that lives within us all.
In the Footsteps of the First People — San & Khoisan Wisdom
Honouring the world’s oldest continuous cultures, we trace the legacy of the San (Khoisan) often called the “first people.” Through guided encounters and teachings, experience indigenous knowledge systems rooted in land, cosmology, and survival across millennia.
Credo Mutwa Cultural Village — Myth, Memory & Prophecy
Walk through an extraordinary outdoor museum of African cosmology, symbolism, and folklore created by renowned Zulu healer Credo Mutwa. This powerful site bridges ancestral knowledge and modern life, offering insight into African metaphysics, storytelling traditions, and prophetic art.
Soweto — History, Resistance & Living Culture
Experience South Africa’s most iconic township through a guided cultural walk led by local experts. Visit historic landmarks, hear stories of the freedom struggle, engage with artists and entrepreneurs, and share meals with community families. Soweto is not just history… it is heartbeat.
Muthi Markets — Traditional Medicine in Practice
Step into bustling open-air markets where indigenous spiritual traditions remain alive. Discover medicinal plants, ritual objects, and sacred materials used in traditional spiritual practices while learning about African approaches to health, spirituality, and protection.
Sacred Sites of Mpumalanga
Explore ancient landscapes rich with mystery, energy, and indigenous significance, places where stone, sky, and spirit converge. Walk among powerful energetic sites, align with celestial rhythms, and experience spaces long held as portals of ancestral presence and indigenous wisdom.
Adam’s Calendar (Inzalo ye Langa) — Ancient Solar Knowledge
Travel to one of the world’s oldest known megalithic sites, a sacred stone circle believed to be over 75,000 years old. Timed with the seasonal equinox, we will participate in a rare ceremonial gathering welcoming the rising sun and the new cycle of life. A deeply moving astronomical and spiritual experience.
Motouleng Cave — The Fertility Sanctuary
Journey to this sacred pilgrimage site long used for healing, prayer, and rites of passage. Known as the “Fertility Cave,” it remains a powerful spiritual centre where offerings, ceremonies, and intentions for renewal are made.
Pilanesberg National Park Safari — Encounter with the Wild

Meet Your Key Facilitators:
Darren Le Baron is an educator, ethnomycologist, and psychedelic researcher working at the intersection of ancestral knowledge, fungi and plant intelligence, and cultural restoration. Based between the UK and the Caribbean, his work is rooted in reconnecting people, particularly those of the African diaspora with indigenous wisdom systems and the natural world.
His research explores ethnomycology, ancient African plant medicines, and their relevance for healing, resilience, and community development in the modern world. A dynamic and sought-after speaker, Darren has presented globally at platforms including the London Psychedelic Society, Breaking Convention, the Detroit Psychedelic Conference, as well as festivals and gatherings such as Ozora, Noisily, All Things Fungi, and Lightning in a Bottle.
Beyond the stage, Darren has facilitated educational group tours and retreats across the UK and internationally — from inner-city London communities to the coasts of Cornwall, and throughout the Caribbean including Jamaica and Barbados. These experiences reflect his commitment to creating spaces for learning, connection, and transformation that are both accessible and culturally meaningful.
As the guide for Walking with the Ancestors, Darren brings not only academic insight, but lived practice — holding space for participants to engage with Africa not as spectators, but as active participants in a journey of remembrance, reconnection, and return.
Keketso Motale is a highly respected South African Sangoma (Healer/Diviner) and iNyanga (Herbalist) with over two decades of dedicated practice in African spiritual traditions. Rooted in deep ancestral lineage, her work is guided by ongoing communication with her ancestors, through whom she channels wisdom on healing, protection, and spiritual alignment.
Keketso’s teachings centre on helping individuals reconnect with their ancestral lineages, understand inherited patterns, and restore balance across spiritual, emotional, and generational dimensions. Through her work, she supports people in recognising their innate gifts, responding to spiritual callings, and walking their path with clarity and purpose.
Her practice integrates sacred rituals, plant medicine, and elemental work, offering guidance on cleansing, protection, and living in harmony with both the seen and unseen realms. Through workshops, teachings, and public dialogues, she continues to preserve and share African spiritual philosophies in ways that are both authentic and accessible.
As a key facilitator within Walking with the Ancestors, Keketso offers participants a rare opportunity to sit in the presence of a practising traditional healer. Her presence brings depth, grounding, and direct connection to the spiritual traditions that continue to shape the land and its people.
Lebohang Sello known affectionately as “The Great Elder Sello,” “Lesedi La Tsela” (The Light of the Path), and “Kgaya Mafifing” (He Who Shines in Darkness) is a revered spiritual mentor, cultural custodian, and creative force rooted in the heart of Soweto. Born and raised in Molapo, he carries a rare balance — the wisdom of ancestral traditions and the expressive fire of contemporary artistry.
With a foundation in the performing arts, Sello’s journey began in 1996 with Thesele Creative Society and the Soweto Dance Theatre. His work has taken him across local and international stages, including powerful productions such as Umoja, The Call by Gibson Kente, and global platforms like the Hip-Hop Dance Theatre Festival Breakin’ Convention. Through movement, storytelling, and performance, he has long served as a vessel for cultural expression and transmission.
Today, Sello stands as the Guardian of the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, a sacred space dedicated to African cosmology, mythology, and ancestral knowledge. In this role, he bridges art, spirit, and community, preserving the legacy of Credo Mutwa while guiding others through its symbolic and spiritual landscapes.
Within Walking with the Ancestors, Elder Sello offers participants a profound encounter with living culture, where story, rhythm, and ancestral presence converge. His guidance opens portals into deeper understanding, inviting each person to walk their path with clarity, courage, and connection.
Mandy Mankazana is a visionary cultural leader, healer, and the pioneering force behind Soweto tourism, widely recognised as the first woman to open the township to the world through meaningful, community-rooted experiences. Her work has transformed how Soweto is seen and experienced, restoring dignity to local narratives while creating pathways for economic empowerment and cultural pride.
As the founder of Ekhaya Lempilo (Home of Health), Mandy has created more than a destination, she has cultivated a living sanctuary of African indigenous knowledge. Rooted in healing, heritage, and community, Ekhaya Lempilo serves as a space where ancestral wisdom is preserved, practiced, and shared with intention.
Her work brings to light the often-overlooked legacy of African herbal medicine and natural healing systems, offering insight into the plant knowledge that has sustained generations. Through this, she continues to safeguard and pass on traditional practices, ensuring they remain alive and relevant for future generations.
Within Walking with the Ancestors, Mandy offers participants not just as a place, but as a living, breathing cultural ecosystem. Through her guidance, guests experience township life with authenticity, respect, and connection, while engaging directly with the wisdom traditions that continue to shape community wellbeing.
Edwin Chitapi is a dedicated African knowledge keeper, researcher, and the founder of Sacred Sites Tours, specialising in the ancient heritage and civilisational landscapes of Southern Africa. His work is rooted in uncovering, preserving, and sharing the profound spiritual and historical significance of Africa’s oldest sacred sites.
As one of only a small number of recognised gatekeepers of Adam’s Calendar (Inzalo Ye Langa) the “Birthplace of the Sun”. Edwin serves as a guardian of one of the world’s most ancient megalithic stone structures. This sacred site holds deep cosmological and initiatory significance, long associated with African alchemical scientists known as the Sanusi, including the revered Baba Credo Mutwa.
For nearly a decade, Edwin has worked intimately with this site, deepening his understanding under the mentorship of researcher and author Michael Tellinger. Through this, he has developed a refined sensitivity to the energetic, astronomical, and spiritual dimensions of these ancient spaces.
Beyond Adam’s Calendar, Edwin guides journeys across Southern Africa to sacred sites and caves known for their powerful energetic frequencies. Places where the land itself becomes a teacher, and where human consciousness can attune to deeper layers of awareness.
A passionate speaker and educator, Edwin’s work invites others to reconnect with Africa’s ancient legacy not as distant history, but as a living, breathing continuum of knowledge, initiation, and remembrance.
Within Walking with the Ancestors, Edwin offers participants rare and privileged access to these sacred landscapes, guiding them through both the physical terrain and the unseen dimensions that make these sites so profoundly transformative.
